Myogadays Interview with Chiaradina (2012) - PART 2 :

What kind of style do you teach/practice and what makes it so special to you? Do you have any ideal? Or have you created your own, unique style?

“Ideal” to me is a kinda misleading term as to me it implies that notion of striving to be anything else but what is now, either running after an outer image or trying to be like someone else when what the world needs is actually you being yourself. Regarding my own teachings: Of course all the teachers that I had the pleasure to either meet along the way or have been certified by have deeply inspired and influenced me – almost everyone follows the lineage of Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya.

Most defining and influential (not necessarily in order of significance or importance) were the following systems or people:

Chiaradina with Shiva Rea in Malibu (Prana Flow)

Ashtanga with its inherent clarity in regards to alignment, its willingness to achieve, deliver and discipline.

Shiva Rea's Prana Flow System that combines pulsing on a quantum level of existence with the spontaneously emerging desire of expression (“spanda”) and allows us to experience ever renewing cycles of evolution within a class (working with “kramas).

Andrey Lappa who to me personally is the original creator of the 360 degree flow on the mat (and within consciousness) while Sadie Nardini taught me not only the importance of actually training your core but also always have every movement emerge from your center.

Paul and Suzee Grilley that in cooperation with Denise Kaufmann are the original founders of Yin Yoga enabled me to develop a fundamental understanding of the structural variances of human anatomy and how that influences asana and an individual's yoga practice.

One more teacher that I really treasure is Kathryn Budig – not only because she's simply super cool, but also because she always makes me laugh which to me is a quality that nowadays I simply do not want to miss anymore from my life and practice! All of that (and much much more) flows and blends into my own personal style “Your Spirit Matters” that – similar to myself – is always work in progress!

How do you shape your teachings/your workshops/your events and how do you transmit the message of Yoga? What do you consider important and wish to pass on to your students?

A lot of teachers broadcast their message from a very mental place – or even from memory – while they wander the rows of their students in an energetically somewhat disconnected state. Practicing with and learning from Andrey Lappa but also all my experiences with Shiva Rea have taught me about the importance of “getting down to it and in there” with the students – diving into the collective Pranamaya Kosha field of a class (the field of the subtle energy body) in order to use my own physical body as an instrument for detecting energetical fluctuations and changes in the course of a class and to be able to stir the quantumfield through the embodied presence of my own physique and energy signature.

A yoga class during which a teacher is not centered in its own heart is useless - any form of connection, healing or communication is directly linked to this centering. Students immediately notice that – subconsciously or consciously!

What I really do want my students to get is that everything they learn on the mat (or on their meditation cushion) has just one single goal – for it to be applied in daily life! Especially in areas where we ourselves are called to develop and grow our life rarely will be “rainbows and unicorns” and we will be challenged in any thinkable way. For it to remain a challenge that we can put up with and master (and not to be in a state of constant overwhelm), a challenging, strenuous physical practice in conscious combination with your breath will enable you to stay calm and centered when being challenged – having enough wiggle room to observe yourself and stay relaxed no matter what. In addition, it always has been essential for me to enable my students to practice even if they cannot make it to class – be it because of temporal or financial challenges – so I created my YouTube Channel “chiaradina” that offers hours of free Yoga sadhanas – from Beginner to Intermediate/Advanced, chanting Mantras, Pranayama and even whole classes – there is something in there for everyone!

The final goal is to “release” students with a regained sense and strength of conscious self-responsibility – I feel that is what our planet – and our society – really does need the most!

Your Flyer states “Ride the holistic wave of all transforming, intelligent openings”. What do you mean by that?

It concerns the previously mentioned quantum-level of consciousness – we are not totally separate units that operate at random from each other but a field of light (or information) – a “wave” in the theory of light – in which all interdependent parts support, challenge and help each other with the final goal of furthering each other's evolution. A conscious retreat (or better: a felt uncoupling) from the encompassing field can only serve one purpose: Re-definition and a new development that will in the end be again mirrored by one's surrounding. Almost everyone these days knows about the theory about a “holographic universe” and has incorporated bits and pieces of the movie “matrix” into his or her own life!

My classes are intentionally created as an evolutionary wave (Thank you Shiva Rea!) that have a beginning, middle/peak and an end. The physical body acts by its very nature as something comparable to a highly intelligent switch board that connects all other levels and dimensions of being – so every opening that we are experiencing physically influences lastingly all other levels and layers (mental, emotional, spiritual) – and vice versa. So when we are flowing with all our senses and our consciousness (in fact there is no separation) through various stages of intelligent openings, we are actually surfing a certain field on a quantum level where each person in the room supports all others that practice with him/her. Every spontaneous opening that we experience during a class – be it on a physical, mental or emotional level – will leave a lasting footprint within our whole being that not only enables us to fully embrace life again but also supports every other person in the room with a life-affirming, positive attitude!
